Instructional note text
Today in literacy we have been looking at instructional text, also we have been shortening it down into note form - here is an example of our class notes for instructions.
We used Gliffy the online diagram tool to organise our work.

Hello Darcy and Ebony,
I am very impressed with the work you have done in creating you instructional text. Do you know why? I went right through your instructions and tested them to see if they worked. Well, I think you know the answer - they worked very well!
Your ‘gliffly’ flowchart shows the steps clearly and accurately. Well done!
However, I asked quite a few other friends to take a look at the instructions - and there was one kind of problem with your text that we wanted to tell you about.
The problem that we had was the way that you abbreviated words in your instructions. We had to work pretty hard sometimes to ‘guess’ the meaning, and then work out what you really wanted to say. We think that you need to do more work on your abbreviations, because they are a very important part of your instructional text. For example, you have two different ways of abbreviating ‘click’ - Cl, clk. You might want to change some of the words in your boxes to write your explanation without so many abbreviations.
Looking forward to seeing more work! I wonder what the other children will say about your instructional text?

Firstly may I congratulate you both on your use of Gliffy. I have only just started using this tool - if you’ve got any great tips I’d love to read them.
Tomorrow (Thursday) one of the year six classes from our school in Sydney Australia will be trying out some of your procedures and so you should have some more comments by your Thursday morning. Do you know the time difference between your school in Nottingham and our school in Sydney? To help you out I will tell you the time here just before I submit a comment…..try checking the time I write against the time recorded on the blog.
Anyway you have produced a very clear diagram. Well done. I look forward to reading the full sentence version because we struggled with a couple of the abbreviations. Remember the audience - it took me a while to work out FF and some young PC users may struggle with IE. Consistency in abbreviations is important too. Overall though, an extremely effective instructional text. Well done. I look forward to reading more!
