Problem solving

We have been doing about problems in maths. Some have been really tricky but some are easy.

And today we looked at this question:every year a person gets their age in candles eg.when 1 years old 1 candle.

Altogether how many candles would the person have blown out at 75 years old.

Please post a comment.

It looks to me that you would have to add up 75+74+73+72 …..+2+1 but have you found an easier way to do it?

The first and last numbers are 1 and 75, which add up to 76. The second last and second first numbers are 2 and 74, which add up to 76. From this you can see that you can split the set of numbers into 37 pairs which all add up to 76, with a 38 in the middle left over. 37*76+38 = 2850
